WEEK 2 - Day 10
Gathering limiting beliefs
Beliefs are very, very powerful.
They run your life, because You see and experience only what you believe is possible.
This also makes them tricky to grasp.
After all, what you believe seems to be your reality.
Which it of course is.
But not because it HAS to be like that, but because what you believe shapes what you create.
There are so many stories of people who have succeeded ‘against the odds’, while others, who seemingly had it all growing up, didn’t.
To ‘make it’, you HAVE to believe that you can!
Btw, having limiting beliefs doesn’t necessarily mean that you had uncaring or mean parents.
A loving dad who only wants the best for you can give you lots of limiting beliefs.
And if you have for example grown up with a mom who was often worried, holding you back from doing things because she was afraid you’d get hurt, telling you to be careful, these repeated messages sink in and then determine how you live your life.
Let’s find some beliefs you have that are holding you back:
Get out your journal, and then write down what you believe about:
Yourself
Your life
Your vision
Your relationship
Your children (if you have any)
Your mom
Your dad
Your siblings (if you have any)
Your friends
Your work
Why you have been born
Your financial situation
Money
Your powers
Your creativity
Your destiny
God
You can of course add any other category that is important to you.
Write quickly, without thinking much about your answers. It’s best to do all the categories at once as this will allow you to get into a state of flow. Which is good because it will then bypass your logical brain and it’s rational explanations, and allows you to get all the stuff you believe out in the open.
Also add the beliefs you collected while doing your visioning work, and then check through the list below to see if any of those hit home too.
Common negative beliefs:
If it hasn’t happened yet, it never will.
I can’t trust myself.
I don’t know what I want.
I cannot earn a living doing something I love.
I should have worked this out by now.
I do not deserve success and happiness.
Feeling bad motivates me to change things.
If I do not give people what they want, I will end up all alone.
It’s too late to pursue my dreams.
I will be judged if I am my real self.
I will never find true love.
Making lots of money is hard.
People can’t be trusted.
I am powerless.
I can’t change.
I don’t deserve to be happy.
I don’t have what it takes.
I’ll always be broke.
It’s better to give than to receive.
I am not self-confident.
Love never lasts anyway.
Life is hard.
And, my personal favorite:
There is something wrong with me.
Once you are done, go through the beliefs you wrote down, and mark the ones that affect you the most in a negative way.
It’s quite likely that some of the same beliefs show up in different categories, and that there are some who express the same thing in a slightly different way.
Keep this list and add new ones if you become aware of them. Once you know how to re-write negative beliefs, you can go through them one by one, and let them go.
For now, decide which 3 to 5 limiting beliefs hold the biggest charge, and write them on an extra piece of paper.
Got them? Then you are done for today.
